6. Creating a Safe Space Within Your Mind
Before I could jump timelines, explore different dimensions, and elevate my consciousness to higher realms, meditation began as my sanctuary—a place to retreat whenever the outside world felt unkind. Bullied for my queer demeanor, I turned to meditation as a way to express myself freely, shielded from the eyes and judgments of others. Meditation became my safe space, and in this lesson, I'm going to guide you in creating your own.
- Keep in mind: In the first five lessons, you learned how to establish the foundation for your meditation practice. If you ever feel overwhelmed or lose track of your meditation journey, simply return to the 5-Step Meditation process to reset and restore your practice to its "default settings."
Beyond becoming a retreat for superconscious exploration, creating a safe space within your mind is a powerful tool for discovering who you are, realizing your purpose, and developing a sense of truth. As you continue on this journey, you’ll find that this inner sanctuary supports you in building self-awareness and resilience. For now, let’s begin with creating your inner sanctuary, so you can deepen your meditation practice and train your mind to meditate effectively.
Phase 1: Finding and Setting the Conscious Breath
You already understand the power of breathing in meditation. Breath comes first; everything else follows. Whatever you're experiencing—mentally or physically—depends on the constancy of your breath. We use it as a foundation for building our safe space.
To begin, close your eyes and consider this prompt:
"If I could breathe only one way for the rest of my life, how would I breathe?"
Spend some time meditating on your conscious breath. Restoring this mindful connection will help reset your nervous system whenever you feel unsettled. Once you’ve established your Conscious Breath, deepen your meditation by moving to the next phase.
Phase 2: Creating a Safe Space Within Your Mind
This is the fun part! Once you feel grounded, use the following prompt to guide the creation of your inner sanctuary:
"Imagine a world where I feel safe and secure enough to be myself. A world where I can be open and vulnerable, free from judgment."
Feel free to let your imagination flow. This inner world can be a reflection of your past, present, or future, in any timeline or lifetime. It might be a place born of your deepest fantasies or boldest curiosities. Remember, in this space, no one can see or hear you—so be yourself, think freely, and feel deeply!
When your safe space feels complete, roll your eyes upward (step 4), locking into your meditation to explore this inner truth. If you ever feel doubt or distraction, return to your breath (step 1) and try again, or revisit it later.
Next week, you'll learn why creating a safe space is vital for both your life journey and your meditation practice!
