♾ Meditation for Dyslexia - Improve Reading & Focus
Struggle to read? Watch the video!
Dyslexia is often associated with challenges in processing 2D imagery, as dyslexic individuals tend to think in three dimensions. This unique way of perceiving the world can sometimes make reading traditional text difficult. If you are dyslexic and looking to enhance your experience of life, improve your ability to study, and navigate the world with greater ease, meditation can be a powerful tool.
I've been exploring various neurodivergent experiences—including autism, ADHD, aphantasia, and now dyslexia—through meditation practices tailored to each condition. This guide will walk you through a meditation practice specifically designed to harness and enhance the way your mind naturally works.
Step 1: Self-Regulation Through Breathing
Before starting any meditation practice, self-regulation is essential. This means bringing your body and mind into a state of calm and focus.
Begin by closing your eyes and inhaling deeply through your nose. Then, exhale slowly through your nose. Repeat this three times.
The Rule of Three:
- Inhale and exhale once—begin to settle.
- Repeat a second time—notice your body relaxing.
- A third breath—your mind begins to enter a meditative state.
You may even notice my voice in the video slowing down as I guide you, reflecting the natural calming effect of controlled breathing. These three simple breaths act as a gateway into a deeper meditation practice.
Step 2: Understanding Consciousness
To enhance your ability to process information as a dyslexic thinker, it is important to understand consciousness.
Consciousness is the part of you that exists within your body but is not bound by it. If I ask you to recall what you had for breakfast, the version of you that visits that memory is your consciousness—not your physical self. You can use this same ability to navigate your imagination and strengthen your visual processing skills.
Step 3: Training Your Mind to Process 3D Imagery
A common difficulty for dyslexics is interpreting traditional 2D text. The key to overcoming this is to train your consciousness to move around images, rather than simply looking at them head-on.
How to Practice:
- Visualise a Letter – Begin with a single letter of the alphabet (both uppercase and lowercase).
- Move Your Consciousness Around It – Imagine yourself viewing the letter from different angles—above, below, from the sides, backwards, and forwards.
- Build a 3D Image – Develop a full spatial awareness of the letter in your mind, so that you understand it as a three-dimensional object.
- Expand to Words – Once comfortable with letters, apply this method to words. Imagine each word as an object and scan around it mentally.
This technique helps your brain recognise words more efficiently when reading text in real life, reducing the struggle of interpreting 2D symbols.
The Key Takeaway
Dyslexia is not a limitation—it is a different way of thinking. Your brain naturally processes information in three dimensions, and meditation can help you work with this strength rather than against it. By training your consciousness to navigate letters and words in a 3D space, you enhance your ability to read and comprehend text with greater ease.
Remember, consistency is key. With regular practice, your brain will become more adept at recognising and processing written language in a way that aligns with your natural cognitive strengths.
