0. Why is meditation so hard?

"Why do I struggle to meditate?" is probably the most common question I get asked. Honestly, you probably don't know enough about meditation to develop an effective practice—or at least that's what I've discovered in all my years teaching meditation.

So you want to build a meditation practice but struggle to meditate? Here are some things you need to know before beginning your meditation journey.

Meditating is a journey of self-discovery, and building a successful meditation practice requires patience, compassion, and a willingness to learn. However, developing these qualities can only come from understanding meditation and mindfully preparing yourself for the transformational journey ahead.

Contrary to popular belief, meditation doesn't require you to silence the mind or shut down your thoughts. These are myths developed from simply observing someone sitting in stillness. While your body may be motionless and your senses closed, your mind will remain active. You're also allowed to be engaged by the experiences within, as long as what you're distracted by is worth your time and attention.

Why is meditation so hard?

"Why do I struggle to meditate?" is probably the most common question I get asked. Honestly, you probably don't know enough about meditation to develop an effective practice—or at least that's what I've discovered in all my years teaching meditation.

You have to remember, meditation is an ancient practice with its origins documented in Eastern art and scripture, so much of what the Western world understands about meditation is based on loose translations and academic interpretation. In fact, some of the concepts required to learn meditation don't even exist in the English language. For example, the word "Prana" is often mistaken for breath or breathing, when in fact Prana is essentially the magical essence of life that your breath carries. Think of Prana as the magic of life and breathing as the pump that keeps the magic alive! But that's a lesson for another week!

Another reason you might be wondering, "Why is meditation not working for me?" could be because you're trying too hard. Building a meditation practice takes much more than sitting cross-legged on the floor and closing your eyes. There are two fundamental shifts in perspective that are key to unlocking your ability to meditate:

  1. Identifying yourself as awareness within the body, often referred to as the higher self, the inner self, or—my personal preference—pure consciousness.
  2. Realizing the breath as a life-giving tool that you, as consciousness, have full control over.

Once these core perspectives are realized and integrated, meditating is as easy as breathing. Fortunately, you're in the right place to learn more, as I'll be sharing lessons week by week to help you build an effective and authentic meditation practice.

I also specialize in teaching people who are neurodivergent how to meditate, so having ADHD doesn't excuse you from practice! I've also found that people who are autistic can be excellent meditators too, and I'll be sure to include notes, where applicable, in each lesson for those with neuro-differences.

Next, you're going to learn what meditation is. So if you haven't subscribed already, do so now, and add me to your safe senders list so you never miss a lesson delivered directly to your inbox!
